ALABAMA A&M UNIVERSITY BAND

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

 

Woodwinds and Brass

  • Letter of good standing from the high school director

  • You must be able to read music proficiently! 

  • Major Scale & arpeggios: C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, B, E, A, and D

       (Two or three octaves when possible)

  • Minor Scales: C Harmonic and A Melodic (and corresponding arpeggios)

  • Chromatic Scale: Practical range of the instrument.

  • Prepared Material: Etude or Solo Grade 3 or higher (All state etudes accepted)

  • Sight-reading

Percussion

  • Letter of good standing from the high school director

  • You must be able to read music proficiently! 

  • Rudiments and melodic proficiency  

    • Any of the percussive Arts Society's 40 Essential Rudiments as requested.

  • Major Scale & arpeggios: C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, B, E, A, D, and B (2 octaves)

  • Minor Scales: C Harmonic and A Melodic (and corresponding arpeggios)

  • Chromatic Scale: Practical range of the instrument.

  • Prepared Material: Etude or Solo Grade 3 or higher (All state etudes accepted)

  • Tuning the timpani on the following intervals:

    • Major 3rd

    • Minor 3rd

    • Perfect 4th

    • Perfect 5th

    • Perfect octave

 

  • Sight-reading- Students should demonstrate the ability to sight-read a piece of music with great success, while mastering dynamics, tempo, stylistic, and other nuances.

Students should produce a characteristic tone on his or her instrument, in all ranges of the instrument. Students should demonstrate proper phrasing and stylistic nuances when performing etude, scales, and sight-reading.  All scales should be tongued, using 8th notes at M.M. = 120 beats per minute.
